Dr Tosh Warwick is a Research Associate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield and Consultant at Heritage Unlocked.
His PhD thesis entitled ‘Middlesbrough’s Steel Magnates: Business, Culture and Participation 1880-1934′ challenged existing understanding of the role of urban elites’ exercised power, authority and influence in the manufacturing town. His recent research has explored contemporary responses to the closure of the Teesside Steelworks and broader debates around loss, heritage and the politics of industrial heritage.
He has held Research Associate roles in Urban Studies at Glasgow and Impact at Manchester Met. He has lectured at Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett and Teesside Universities and has extensive experience in the heritage sector where he has contributed to major National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), public and private projects.
Current project: Steel Heritage and the Future of the Manufacturing Past
This research project arises from the closure of the Teesside Steelworks in 2015 and focuses on the steel industry and broader approaches to the industrial past and industrial heritage in community engagement, loss and regeneration. This work has included extensive engagement with local and regional engagement around the closure, demolition, loss and regeneration of the former Teesside steelworks site. He was worked collaboratively with Teesside Archives, Historic England and the Tees Valley Combined Authority through consultation and membership of the Teesworks Heritage Taskforce in developing community and policy approaches and frameworks to the history of the site and retention of tangible assets alongside wider community memory.
