Following the 2016 US presidential election, much ink has been spilled on the topic of the “white working class.” Conjured as the face of the US Rust Belt, whiteness has become synonymous with the “left behind” of deindustrialization, whereas figures of the “migrant” are operationalized to inflict blame. How then, have racialized communites been affected by deindustrialization, when whiteness is taken as a given? What might the experience of racialized communities, in the US, Canada, India and elsewhere, tell us about the process and aftermath of deindustrialization? Join DePOT affiliates as they share their work and discuss how race and caste figure into the landscape of deindustrialization studies.
